Collin Morikawa Withdraws from Texas Open Due to Back Injury, Masters Status Uncertain

World No. 8 Collin Morikawa has withdrawn from the Valero Texas Open due to a persistent back injury, casting doubt on his participation in next week's Masters Tournament. The 29-year-old hasn't competed since March 12 when he withdrew after just one hole at The Players Championship.

The Sudden Nature of the Injury

Morikawa's back problem emerged unexpectedly during his round at TPC Sawgrass. After feeling fine during warm-up, he injured his back during a practice swing on the 11th hole. "I felt fine in warmup, like no signs of back problems," Morikawa explained. "And teed it up on 11, and took one practice swing, and I just knew it was gone."

The severity of the injury forced him to make the difficult decision to withdraw immediately, describing it as "the worst thing in the world" while emphasizing he would play if physically able.

Masters Implications and Recent Form

The timing of this injury is particularly unfortunate given Morikawa's recent resurgence. He ended a 28-month winless streak at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February, followed by strong showings at the Genesis Invitational (T7) and Arnold Palmer Invitational (T5).

Augusta National has been kind to Morikawa, with five consecutive top-20 finishes including a tie for third in 2024. He was considered among the favorites for his first green jacket, making the Texas Open withdrawal particularly concerning as his final tune-up opportunity.

Despite nearly three weeks of rest and initially positive reports about his recovery, Morikawa's withdrawal just before Tuesday's pro-am suggests the injury remains problematic.
