Finding Peace and Presence: A Personal Journey Back to Amen Corner
A Journey from Crisis to Healing at Augusta
In April 2025, Golf.com's Digital Programming VP Tim Reilly experienced a medical emergency at Augusta National's iconic Amen Corner. Suffering from a Crohn's disease flare-up that had been part of his life for 20 years, he was unable to continue and required assistance off the course.
The following year became a test of endurance: multiple surgeries, months of daily IV treatments lasting 10-12 hours, and what he describes as being "a prisoner in my own body."
Return to Amen Corner: A Moment of Reflection
Returning to the 2026 Masters in good health, Reilly made a pilgrimage to the exact spot where his crisis occurred. In a moment of stoic silence, he found closure as clear thoughts replaced the dark memories under blue Georgian skies.
This personal ritual coincided with a Masters communication video that resonated deeply: "In a world that's louder than ever, there's power in a place of calm... That's the power of being present."
The Spiritual Power of Golf's Cathedral
Throughout the week, Reilly observed touching moments: a Chinese family cheering for Haotong Li, English friends supporting Justin Rose, and a grandmother sharing Masters memorabilia with her grandson. These encounters reinforced his belief that Amen Corner serves as golf's most spiritual setting.
His annual tradition of walking Amen Corner with GOLF's managing editor Josh Berhow took on new meaning—transforming from a painful struggle in 2025 to a symbol of returning normalcy in 2026.
Finding Inner Peace Through Golf
Reilly's story illustrates how golf's most challenging moments can become sources of strength. His philosophy of "gut it out" takes on both literal and metaphorical meaning, emphasizing resilience in the face of health challenges.
This powerful personal narrative transcends golf statistics, showcasing the sport's profound human dimension and Amen Corner's unique spiritual significance.
