Fitzpatrick's Driver Crisis — The Numbers Tell the Story

Matt Fitzpatrick won three PGA Tour events in just over a month this spring, climbing to World No. 4. Then his Titleist GT3 driver cracked, and the numbers haven't been the same since.

Before the break, Fitzpatrick ranked 12th on Tour in SG: Off-the-Tee. After it, he dropped to 46th in the category, with results of T52, T14, T36, 2nd, and 22nd in his next five starts. "If you look at my off the tee from then, it's quite telling," he acknowledged after his first round at the Travelers Championship.

Why Driver Fitting Isn't Simple

Fitzpatrick is a gear-free agent outside of a Bettinardi putter deal, giving him flexibility to explore options. He tried a new GT3 head and a Titleist GTS2 at the Memorial, but neither replicated his gamer's feel.

At TPC River Highlands, he tested both the Ping G430 LST and G440 LST. The G430 won out for its launch and spin characteristics. The critical detail: Fitzpatrick hits a pull-draw and has always preferred heel-weighted CGs to help the face close through impact. The 17g CG shifter was set to the heel, with an additional 3g of hot melt added to the heel to dial it in precisely. A version with 6g of hot melt proved too much.

Round 1 Results — Promising Start

Using the new Ping, Fitzpatrick missed just one fairway and gained over a stroke off the tee in his opening round. One round is a small sample, but it's the most encouraging sign in weeks.

Putter Movement Around the Field

The practice green was equally active. Justin Rose switched to an Axis1 SP Series-Axiom putter and gained 2.3 strokes putting in an opening-round 65. Rickie Fowler moved from his Scotty Cameron GoLo 7 S1 to an all-aluminum Xperimental Phantom prototype. J.J. Spaun adopted a custom bronze-finished Phantom 9.5R with an aluminum face insert.

Jordan Spieth spent two days testing a L.A.B. Golf mallet and a Cameron prototype but ultimately returned to his T.P. Mills blade.

Strokeslab's Take

Fitzpatrick's mid-season slide is a compelling real-world case study in SG: OTT's impact on scoring. A single broken club triggered a measurable performance drop for a top-5 player — underscoring both the importance of tee-shot performance and the precision required in modern driver fitting.

💬Strokeslab コメント

Fitzpatrick's drop from 12th to 46th in SG: OTT after a single equipment failure is a textbook demonstration of how tee-shot performance cascades through a player's scoring — and exactly the kind of data-driven story Strokeslab exists to tell.
