Round 3 of the Genesis Scottish Open was halted for two and a half hours as a classic Scottish haar — coastal sea fog — blanketed the Renaissance Club. J.J. Spaun, among the earliest starters, called the conditions on the opening hole "borderline," noting he could barely make out the bunker 300 yards down the left from the tee.

The Rule That Kept Play Going

What kept the tournament committee from halting play earlier? A nuanced but consequential golf rule. Tournament Director Miguel Vidaor explained that players are not entitled to see their ball land or its flight. The standard is narrower: for tee shots on par 4s and par 5s, players must be able to discern the contours of bunkers, penalty areas, or the tree line. For approach shots, it's bunkers around the green and the pin flag.

The R&A recommends suspension only when the landing area's contours are no longer visible — a distinction that allowed early starters to play through fog that, while thick, hadn't crossed that threshold until around 10:20 a.m.

Winners and Losers in the Murk

The fog exacted a toll on the early wave. Viktor Hovland and Eugenio Chacarra each went two over through four holes. Spaun, however, navigated the stretch at even par before the horn sounded and finished with a 3-under 67. "To get through the first four holes at even par was a win for me," he said.

With tee times pushed back, leaders including Rory McIlroy faced a race against daylight — an added complication heading into next week's Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
