Arccos, best known as a personal performance tracker for amateur golfers, has quietly become a behind-the-scenes partner for nearly every major OEM. Arccos CEO Sal Syed appeared on GOLF's Fully Equipped podcast to explain how real-world shot data is reshaping club design.

The End of Linear Iron Gapping

For decades, club designers assumed that equal loft increments between irons would produce equal distance gaps. Arccos data exposed a critical flaw in this logic: for mid-handicap players, linear loft gapping does not translate to linear distance gapping on the course. PING responded by developing a proprietary non-linear gapping algorithm grounded in actual on-course performance data — a fundamental shift from spec-sheet theory to real-world results.

Wedge Design Follows Where Players Actually Play

Arccos data also revealed that amateur golfers use their wedges far more often from the rough than from the fairway. This insight pushed PING to revisit grind and bounce designs, tailoring options more specifically for shots from longer grass — a detail that traditional design assumptions had overlooked.

G440 Hybrid: Designing for Different Players

The G440 hybrid line offers another example. Bag data showed virtually no overlap between players who carry a 2-hybrid and those who carry a 5-hybrid. PING responded with a progressive face angle design by loft, treating each hybrid as a product for a distinct type of player rather than a single unified concept.
