J.J. Spaun Claims Victory at Texas Open After Difficult Season Start
U.S. Open Champion Ends Victory Drought
J.J. Spaun, the 2023 U.S. Open champion, captured his first victory of the season at the Valero Texas Open. The 35-year-old Californian shot a final-round 67 (-5) to finish at 17-under 271, securing a one-shot victory in challenging wet conditions.
Breaking Through Season-Long Struggles
Spaun entered the week having failed to post a top-20 finish in seven starts this season, with his best result a T-24 at The Players Championship. "I haven't been feeling the form I wanted based on last season," Spaun admitted, describing the pressure that came with being a major champion.
Clutch Finish on 16th and 17th
The decisive moment came on the final day's back nine. Spaun hit his tee shot to 3 feet on the par-3 16th for birdie, then drove the green on the 306-yard 17th hole to 10 feet for eagle. This birdie-eagle combination effectively sealed the victory.
MacIntyre's Close Call Falls Short
Robert MacIntyre, who had led for most of the tournament, mounted a late charge with an eagle on the 17th to get within one shot. However, his approach shot on the 609-yard closing hole found trouble, and his birdie putt to force a playoff came up short. MacIntyre finished with a 70 to share second place with Matt Wallace (68) and Michael Kim (69).
Spaun's clutch birdie-eagle finish on 16-17 demonstrates how releasing pressure can unlock peak performance, even for major champions struggling with expectations.
