Mark Hubbard Takes One-Shot Lead at Valero Texas Open After Birdie Rally
Hubbard's Spectacular Finish Steals the Show
Mark Hubbard delivered a stunning performance in the opening round of the Valero Texas Open, carding 7-under 65 highlighted by six birdies over his final eight holes. His bold approach on the par-5 18th, successfully carrying a creek to set up his final birdie, separated him from a six-way tie for the lead.
Masters Qualification Battle Intensifies
With next week's Masters Tournament looming, this event represents the final opportunity for many players to secure their spot at Augusta National. Tony Finau, currently No. 107 in world rankings, finds himself without Masters eligibility for the first time since 2017. His 6-under 66 keeps him just one shot back and very much in contention.
Joining Finau at 66 are Andrew Putnam, Steven Fisk, Davis Thompson, and Robert MacIntyre, with MacIntyre being the only player in that group already qualified for the Masters.
Ideal Scoring Conditions
TPC San Antonio presented favorable conditions with minimal wind and morning rain that softened the course. Officials allowed preferred lies, contributing to the low scoring. Despite a 90-minute weather delay at the start, 24 players will complete their rounds Friday morning.
A large group at 7-under 67 includes both Masters-qualified players like Tommy Fleetwood, Ludvig Åberg, and Maverick McNealy, alongside hopefuls such as Will Zalatoris, who continues his comeback from multiple back surgeries.
Hubbard's six-birdie finish over eight holes exemplifies clutch performance under pressure. The Masters qualification storyline adds significant context to how players are managing both technical execution and mental pressure.
