Pat Perez Returns to Competition After Year-Long Break Following LIV Golf Release
Former PGA Tour professional Pat Perez has made a remarkable competitive comeback at the Senior PGA Championship after nearly a full year away from the game following his release from LIV Golf.
The LIV Years and Release
Perez joined LIV Golf in 2022 as part of Dustin Johnson's 4Aces team, drawn by what he called "winning the lottery." However, his three-year stint produced modest results, with a best individual finish of 28th. After finishing 48th in 2024, the team cut him, leading to a transition into LIV's broadcast commentary role.
Complete Golf Hiatus
From January 2025 through September, Perez took a complete break from golf. He didn't hit a single shot for nine months, focusing entirely on his television work. "Didn't even think about it," he explained, believing his competitive playing career was over.
Path Back to Competition
The turning point came when Perez realized he could compete in three senior majors not run by the PGA Tour: the Senior PGA Championship, U.S. Senior Open, and Senior Open Championship. While his PGA Tour reinstatement was approved, it came with the condition of sitting out the entire 2026 season, costing him his first 10 months of Champions tour eligibility.
Physical and Mental Rehabilitation
Starting his comeback preparation in August 2025, Perez faced significant physical challenges. "My hand strength was gone. My arm strength was gone. Shoulders hurt. Back hurt," he described the difficulties of returning to golf at age 49 after such an extended break.
Strong Showing at Senior PGA
Perez's comeback has shown immediate promise, opening with rounds of 69 and 70 to sit at five-under par and tied for 9th at the Senior PGA Championship. His performance suggests the six-month preparation plan is paying dividends.
Looking ahead to 2027, when he'll have full Champions tour access, Perez plans an aggressive schedule, aiming to maximize the critical 50-55 age window for senior golf success.
Perez's comeback demonstrates the importance of structured preparation when returning to competitive golf at 49. His experience and course management skills could prove valuable assets on the senior circuit.
