PIF Pulls Plug: What Comes Next for LIV Golf and Its Players?
PIF Withdraws: LIV Golf at a Crossroads
Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) officially announced it will cease financing LIV Golf after the 2026 season. Having already poured over $5 billion into the breakaway circuit since its 2022 launch — a figure projected to exceed $6 billion by year's end — even the world's wealthiest sovereign wealth fund has reached its limit.
What's Left of the Schedule
Despite the financial upheaval, LIV insists remaining 2026 events will proceed as planned, including stops in South Korea, Spain, England, and multiple U.S. venues through August. However, the New Orleans event has already been cancelled, and further disruptions appear likely.
The PGA Tour Holds All the Cards
With no credible threat of player poaching remaining, the PGA Tour can afford to play the long game. Brooks Koepka returned in January under a returning member program that carried steep penalties — forfeited equity shares, FedEx Cup exclusion, and a $5 million charitable donation. DeChambeau, Rahm, and Smith let the February deadline pass without acting.
PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp has signaled that any future returns will be handled on a case-by-case basis, with antitrust lawsuit involvement and membership resignation status both factoring into each player's treatment.
LIV's Survival Options
The league has appointed two investment bankers to its new independent board and is exploring a "diversified, multi-partner investment model." Reported options include fewer events, an international-only format, or some form of merger with the DP World Tour. Without PIF's bottomless resources, however, the $30 million purses and nine-figure player contracts are effectively finished.
Strokeslab Take
From a Strokes Gained perspective, LIV's limited major-event sample sizes always made player performance comparisons difficult. As more elite players return to the PGA Tour's data-rich environment, the analytical picture of professional golf's true competitive landscape will sharpen considerably.
LIV's potential collapse could reunify professional golf's competitive data landscape — with top players returning to PGA Tour events, Strokes Gained analysis will once again reflect a true, undivided picture of world-class performance.
