Rahm Takes Lead at LIV Mexico Despite Funding Uncertainty Surrounding Series
Rahm Rebounds From Masters Struggles
Jon Rahm took the lead at LIV Golf Mexico after two rounds, following up his opening 65 with a 67 on Friday to reach 12-under par at Chapultepec Golf Club. The Spaniard holds a one-shot advantage over Matthew Wolff, Tom McKibbin, and Harold Varner III.
"It takes a lot to win, and you also need a little bit of luck," Rahm commented after his round. "I'm clearly playing good enough, I just need to take advantage of the opportunities I've been giving myself."
Financial Uncertainty Looms Over LIV
While Rahm focused on his golf, speculation continued regarding LIV's financial future. CEO Scott O'Neil assured staff that the 2026 season would proceed "at full throttle," but questions remain about funding beyond this year.
In a revealing interview with TNT Sports, O'Neil acknowledged the reality of their situation: "You're funded through the season, and then you work like crazy as a business to create a business plan to keep us going. But that's not different from any other private equity-funded business."
Revenue Growth and Profitability Goals
Despite substantial costs including $30 million in prize money per tournament, O'Neil projects that 10 of 13 teams and four of 14 events will become profitable. According to Money in Sport, LIV has already spent $5.3 billion and is projected to exceed $6 billion by year's end, highlighting the significant investment required to sustain the tour's operations.
While Rahm demonstrates consistent performance on the course, LIV Golf's financial transparency issues continue to raise questions about the tour's long-term sustainability.
