Scheffler Rescues Even-Par 72 After His Worst Ball-Striking Day in Two Years at the Memorial
Scottie Scheffler described his second round at the Memorial as a round where he thought he might shoot 90 — yet he walked off Muirfield Village with an even-par 72, one of the more impressive scrambling performances of his career.
Ball-Striking at a Two-Year Low
Scheffler recorded just 15 GIR over 36 holes — a number he typically posts in a single round. He shanked a bunker shot (his first since the Tour Championship two years ago) and was forced to punch back to the fairway on the par-4 third after a wild tee shot. Muirfield Village's heavy rough and deep bunkers made every missed shot expensive.
Three Straight Bogeys Threatened the Cut
After scrambling for pars through much of the front nine, Scheffler made three consecutive bogeys around the turn and found himself near the bubble. The Memorial cuts to the top 50 and ties, leaving no margin for error.
Back-Nine Rescue: Three Birdies in Four Holes
The turning point came at the par-4 13th, where a wedge to 3 feet produced his first birdie of the day. He followed with a 20-footer on 15 and an unlikely 40-footer on 16, rattling off three consecutive birdies to salvage the round. He finished nine shots off the pace, with J.T. Poston's 65 grabbing the lead.
The even-par card extended Scheffler's consecutive cut streak to 76, dating back to August 2022.
Final Tune-Up Before the U.S. Open
This is Scheffler's last start before the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills — the only major he needs to complete the career Grand Slam. He headed straight to the range after signing his card.
Strokeslab Take
From a Strokes Gained lens, Scheffler's SG: APP and SG: OTT were almost certainly at season-low levels today. That he still posted even par speaks to elite-level SG: ATG and SG: Putting. His floor is simply higher than everyone else's on Tour — and that's what makes him dangerous even on his worst days.
With just 15 GIR over 36 holes, Scheffler's ball-striking was at a two-year low — yet his scrambling kept the scorecard intact, a reminder that his Strokes Gained floor remains higher than almost anyone else on Tour.
