A Legal Battle Behind LIV Golf's Origins

UK-based World Golf Group (WGG) and Premier Golf League (PGL) have filed a lawsuit in London's Commercial Court against LIV Golf, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), and Golf Saudi, seeking between $210 million and $630 million in damages. ESPN obtained and verified the complaint, which was originally filed on April 16.

The Core Allegation: A Stolen Blueprint

The plaintiffs argue that LIV Golf is a "bald facsimile" of the PGL concept, which Andy Gardiner first conceived in 2009. Specific similarities cited include shotgun starts, simultaneous individual and team competition, and four-player franchises with a captain — all central features of LIV Golf's format.

How Negotiations Collapsed

At the 2019 Saudi International, PGL leadership met PIF Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan and entered serious funding talks. A term sheet for $1 billion was reached in November 2019, with PIF slated to provide $490 million. However, PGA Tour threats of player bans and OWGR point concerns stalled player sign-ups.

As momentum faded, PIF shifted its stance from investor to acquirer — but offered only $5 million and 1% equity, far below PGL's ask. Talks collapsed, and co-founder Richard Marsh defected to the Saudi side in May 2021.

LIV's Launch and Current Struggles

With the help of Phil Mickelson and Greg Norman, LIV Golf launched in June 2022, signing stars like Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, and Bryson DeChambeau with contracts exceeding $100 million. The PIF invested over $5 billion before announcing in April 2026 that it would halt further funding. LIV CEO Scott O'Neil is now attempting to raise $300 million to keep the tour alive.
