During the second round of the Texas Open, Jordan Spieth found himself in a challenging situation after driving his ball into the native area on the 12th hole. However, his deep understanding of golf rules turned what could have been a disaster into a manageable recovery.

Double Relief Saves the Day

Spieth and caddie Michael Greller first identified a large rock near the ball as a loose impediment that could be moved. After relocating the boulder, they discovered fire ants in the vicinity, which qualified for relief under Rule 16.2 (Dangerous Animal Condition). This rule applies when dangerous animals like venomous snakes, stinging bees, alligators, fire ants, or bears could cause serious injury to a player.

Critical for Making the Cut

The one club-length relief from the fire ants gave Spieth a much more playable lie. While he still made bogey on the hole, the rules knowledge likely saved him at least one stroke. This proved crucial as Spieth shot 71 (-1) and made the cut at -2 by just one shot.
