Defending champion Rory McIlroy fired a 5-under 67 to share the first-round lead at the 90th Masters, despite hitting only 5 of 14 fairways. The Northern Irishman's confidence from completing the career Grand Slam last year has given him the freedom to play aggressively.

"I think winning a Masters makes it easier to win your second one," McIlroy said, exemplifying the mental edge that comes with breaking through at Augusta National.

Course Conditions Favor the Elite

Augusta National is playing firm, fast, and increasingly difficult due to dry conditions and high temperatures. Players noticed the course getting "crusty" throughout the day, with greens becoming less receptive as rounds progressed.
