Former world No. 1 Michelle Wie West has added another tournament to her brief return to competitive golf, announcing her participation in next month's Mizuho Americas Open on a sponsor invitation.

The 36-year-old officially retired at the 2023 U.S. Women's Open at Pebble Beach but will utilize her 10-year exemption from winning the 2014 U.S. Women's Open (extended two years for maternity leave) to compete at this year's championship at Riviera Country Club.

"This is Not a Comeback"

Wie West emphasized her intentions clearly: "This is not a comeback by any means, it's not a beginning of something else." With the finite nature of this return, she has a singular focus: to play the way she knows she can play, just two more times.

The five-time LPGA champion has been preparing at her Las Vegas home, acknowledging the nerves but describing them as "good anxiety" - excitement about putting herself in competitive position again.

Overcoming Physical and Mental Battles

Wie West's career was marked by significant injury struggles, including wrist surgeries in 2007 and hand surgery in 2018. These physical challenges took a mental toll, made worse by the pressure to maintain a "champion mindset" that never showed weakness.

"I felt like to be a champion golfer, I had to have that mindset that never broke, never complained," she reflected. Later in her career, being honest about her struggles proved liberating.

Success Measured by Feel, Not Results

For Wie West, success in this limited return will be gauged by feeling rather than results. After that emotional 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole at Pebble Beach, she's ready to step back into the arena one more time, sharing the experience with her daughter Makenna, who was just a baby during her initial farewell.
