Phil Mickelson Withdraws from Masters Due to Family Health Issues as Tiger Woods Also Steps Away
The golf world faces an unprecedented situation as two of its biggest legends simultaneously withdraw from the Masters Tournament.
Mickelson's Extended Absence
Phil Mickelson, 55, announced his Masters withdrawal on social media, citing the need to "navigate a personal health matter" with his family. This marks an extended absence for the three-time Masters champion, who had already missed the first four LIV Golf League events this season for the same reason.
Mickelson recently returned to competition in South Africa two weeks ago, finishing tied for 48th. The withdrawal means he'll miss his scheduled 33rd Masters appearance, where he boasts an impressive record including his most recent victory in 2010.
Woods' Treatment Decision
Tiger Woods announced Tuesday his decision to "step away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health." This came four days after his arrest on suspicion of DUI following a rollover car crash in Florida.
Historic Simultaneous Absence
For the first time since 1994, both five-time Masters champion Woods and three-time winner Mickelson will be absent from golf's first major of the year. Mickelson's 16 top-10 finishes at Augusta National rank behind only Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan, highlighting the significance of his absence from the sport's most prestigious tournament.
The simultaneous absence of these golf legends highlights personal challenges while creating a historically rare situation for the Masters Tournament.
