"I didn't quite have it today," McIlroy admitted after watching his comfortable position transform into a wide-open championship. The collapse began at the 11th with a double bogey, continued with struggles at the 12th, and saw his trademark miss into the trees at 13th - this time without the recovery magic of the previous two days.

Remarkably, McIlroy was the only player in the top 12 to shoot over par on a day when the scoring average of 70.63 was the second-lowest in Masters history.

"I thought if Rory could shoot a 68 today he might run away with the tournament," Lowry observed. "It's not easy to go out and go after it when you're at the top of the leaderboard."

Despite the setback, McIlroy's 2025 playoff victory provides psychological armor. "I'd like to think that I'll play a little bit freer and I'll play like I've already got a green jacket, which I do," he reflected while heading to the practice facility for late-night preparation.
