Streamsong Resort Unveils 'Bone Valley' Course, Named After Prehistoric Marine Fossil Discovery

Streamsong Resort in Florida will open its fourth 18-hole course, Bone Valley, designed by David McLay Kidd, for preview play on November 30th. While many expected the new course to follow the color-naming convention of the existing Blue, Red, and Black courses, the resort chose a name rooted in geological history instead.

A Prehistoric Marine Graveyard

The name "Bone Valley" reflects the area's remarkable paleontological significance. Millions of years ago, Central Florida was submerged beneath a turbulent ocean teeming with marine life. Among the apex predators was the megalodon, a massive shark that dwarfed modern Great Whites. The abundance of fossilized remains from these ancient creatures gave the region its distinctive name.

Construction Reveals Ancient Treasures

During construction, McLay Kidd experienced an unexpected crash course in paleontology. Fossils appeared regularly throughout the site, predominantly megalodon teeth. "The first time I found one, I was blown away. By the fourth or fifth, I was less impressed," McLay Kidd told GOLF.com. The discovery of ancient shark teeth became as routine as "stumbling across a cactus in a desert."

Strategic Branding Beyond Colors

KemperSports CEO Steve Skinner explained that "the name was a natural fit for land and a course that was literally millions of years in the making." From a commercial perspective, Bone Valley offers significantly more creative merchandising opportunities than a simple color designation. The resort's main lodge already features fossilized megalodon jaws, and the new course logo embraces the prehistoric theme with sharp, graphic imagery of skeletal marine creatures.

The ancient waters weren't dominated by megalodons alone—giant sea turtles, early manatee ancestors, and countless other marine species left their mark in the phosphate-rich soil, creating a story no color name could convey.

Incorporating geological history into course naming goes beyond marketing strategy—it creates a unique connection between golfers and the land's prehistoric story.
